Compelled by his love for Cold War history and climbing, author and climber Pete Takeda wrote his An Eye at the Top of the World: The Terrifying Legacy of the Cold War's Most Daring CIA Operation, which documents his 2005 attempt to retrace the steps of a CIA-recruited team of Americans and Indians. During their 1965 mission, they planted a series of sensors atop a remote Himalayan peak in order to monitor Chinese nuclear bomb testing. Takeda's book details the reenactment of the mission which proved nearly fatal due to storms and avalanches - a reenactment that led to a number of his team being treated for post-traumatic stress.
