John Harlin II changed the face of Alpine climbing, summiting some of the most treacherous mountains in Europe. But it was the north face of the Eiger, the direttissima, with which he was particularly obsessed. John Harlin III was nine years old when his father made another attempt on the Eiger. Despite setbacks, and poised for the summit dash, Harlin's rope broke. He plummeted to his death. Young John Harlin III, possessed with the same passion for risk as his father, had promised his mother that he would not be an Alpine climber. In 2005, John Harlin could resist no longer.
